INTERVIEW - THE SCUM: "All the lyrics of the songs are inspired by horror movies!"

Traditional Death Metal band The Scum formed in 2013 and are heavily influenced by horror films, so with Halloween nearly upon us, now is the perfect time to check out the band and their new album 'The Hunger', which was unleashed in May this year. The album is named after the 80s Horror film of the same name directed by Tony Scott, starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon. The lyrics of their music are also inspired by horror films. We caught up with vocalist José Ospina to find out all about The Scum and their latest dark offering...

Firstly, let’s go back to the beginning. What are your earliest memories of music and the moment you decided you wanted to be a musician?

Maybe listening to the Beatles on Tv when I was really young. I had 4 or 5 years, I think. I wanted to be a musician since I was singing with the lyrics of the songs of early Slayer, Anthrax, Kreator and Possessed albums in the 80s.

Can you tell us about how you came to form as a band?

The band was formed in 2013 by guitarist Santiago de los Rios a little time later, the drummer Mauricio Aristizabal joined the band, and I, José Ospina, get in to do the vocals in 2015. We had some people doing the bass and lead guitars, but 2 years ago, we found Mateo Tabares, who joined us to do the lead guitars and bassist Mateo Garcia joined some months ago. We feel that this lineup could be stable for a long time.

How would you best describe your music for those who aren't aware?

We play death metal in the traditional way. Our music is direct, catchy and extremely aggressive. With a sound very influenced by the Stockholm school of Swedish Death metal.

What are your main fluences musically?

Our main influences are the seminal bands of the European and US death metal of the late 80s and the early 90s. Bands like Entombed, Dismember, Obituary, Death, Benediction, Bolt Thrower, etc.

What are you currently working on now?

We are preparing our shows in some of the biggest metal festivals in Colombia in the coming months and preparing the recording of a new EP. We released an album ('The Hunger') a few months ago and a video some weeks ago, and we are promoting them.

What was the writing and recording process like for the new album 'The Hunger'?

The writing of the material and the preparation for the recording were so fluid. The recording of drums, main guitars and vocals was very good and fast, but then the pandemic arrives, and we had to leave the recording unfinished till 2021. Last year was finished the recording and made the mixing and mastering work

What are the main lyrical themes explored on the album?

All the lyrics of the songs are inspired by horror movies!

How did you arrive at the album title 'The Hunger', and what does it mean to you?

The Hunger is the title of an 80s strange vampire movie with David Bowie. I always want to do a lyric with that name, but the history of our song is about a man that has the curse of lycanthropy and tries to escape from it but falls again in his curse because of the hunger that he feels. I was inspired by many classic werewolves movies.

What was the hardest part of writing the new material?

Maybe to do the drums arrangements. Our drummer and I spent approximately three months doing that work and getting ready to record the drums. But we feel that it is worth the work.

How do you think the new material compares to your previous work?

I think that our new album is more song-oriented. The songs are better written are more memorable and catchy but still fucking heavy and aggressive.

How excited are you to play the new material live, and what can fans expect from your live shows?

A deadly dose of aggression and violence! We have played some of the new songs, and are very fun to play, and the audiences have reacted very well to them. A lot of violence in those pits!

What have been some of the best moments for you in the band, and why?

Maybe when respected producers like Tomas Skogsberg, Dan Swano and Andy Classen have shown good appreciation for our work. Also, musicians like Jeff Becerra of Possessed and David Ingram of Benediction have made very good commentaries about our music, which means a lot to us.

Outside of music, what else do you enjoy in your downtime?

Watch movies, lift weights in the gym and read philosophy.

What else have you got planned for the rest of the year, and what else would you like to achieve?

To get in some major festivals in our country and promote the album and the video as much as we can.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Brutal and evil greetings to all the fans of old-school death Metal.
