Threatpoint from Pennsylvania formed through the ashes of other bands in 2012 and pulled together to bring their array of influences within the genres of metal and rock to create their groove metal sound today. Since their formation they have unleashed two offerings, 'Careful What You Wish For' in 2014 and their debut self titled album in 2013. The band show they are still alive and kicking with their third full length album, 'R.I.P' which was unveiled to the world in October 2016.
New single title track ‘R.I.P’ opens the album and gets straight to the point with an ominous effect intro, before the melodic thrash guitars and crashing drums take control. Chris James' vocals spill out in a ferocious and speedy manner with an impressive screeching guitar solo taking hold also, all adding up to make sure this opener makes a hell of an impact.
‘Deadend Machineland’ is full of melodic riffs paired with thumping groove sections and packs a hefty chanted anthemic chorus, which is highly memorable and enjoyable. The whole song fires of like a machine gun in action...
Carrying on the theme of death and bleakness is ‘Tombstones of My Enemies’ which like the previous tracks possesses a serious groove factor, the band clearly revel here. Considering the context and lyrical meaning is morbid, it’s hard not to bounce around with enjoyment to the melodic metal sounds.
‘Light Bleeds Through The Black’ starts off with a crackling sombre intro, creating a dark atmosphere before great chugging riffs surface with catchy bass riffs giving more depth. The hushed eerie vocal sections paired with contrasting screams and very effective, and helps to embraces the context of song by combining softer or lighter moments that are seeped in darkness and heavier parts.
‘Bury The Wicked’ keeps the atmosphere sinister with occult/tribalistic sounds opening this one, before a barrage of storming riffs, vocals and fast drums take hold. This is a extremely depthful and technical track, making another highlight amongst the many.
‘Angels With Broken Wings’ (feat Lauren Balogh of Drama Scream/SuperRadical) graces us with a strong harmonised intro. It is a powerful, crushing, super melodic song, which features a perfect vocal duet with Lauren who offers mighty screams to compliment Chris, which is very impressive through it's talent and execution. Be sure to put this on repeat!
Closing song ‘Death Rides Again’ as you expect, goes out all guns blazing and highlights all their best elements we have seen throughout, making it a brilliant way to end and making a lasting impact.
R.I.P ironically is guaranteed to get you moving and headbanging from start to end with no rest or peace offered. It features an abundance of impressive lead guitars, unstoppable grooves and hard hitting melodies. Threatpoint clearly have a lot more to offer and show that they are full of energy and ideas with this new release.
