Luna Rise from Austria are a melodic rock band who intertwine goth, melancholic pop, hard rock and more to unleash something unique and find the balance of heavy yet emotional soothing explorations. Having just recently signed with NRT-Records they decide to re-issue their momentous EP, ‘Smoking Kills, But Love Can Break A Heart’ for those who may have missed it...
Opening song, ‘When You Fall’ captures their signature sound perfectly, so it’s no surprise it was released as a single. It’s catchy yet with a heavy backdrop with complex guitar riffs and dark brooding deep vocals, all kept coherent with a flowing current of fierce energy with a slight creepy vibe, aided by the keys, making this a great gothic anthem!
‘Dead Alley’ succeeds in being even more melodic especially as it’s driven by emotion – this is such a slick smooth track, which embodies the dark sound exhibited by the mighty guitars and synths along with the lighter elements portrayed by the lyrics, vocals and strong euphonious harmonies. Not to mention it features one of the most memorable choruses so far!
‘616’ has extremely infectious melodies and riffs all crafted in an eerie and eager fashion! The instrumentation is cleverly wrapped around Chris’s emotional vocals, creating the mood desired; their characteristic mighty melodic Goth tinged rock.
‘Glory Nightmare’ has an urgency to it and is also the heaviest song featured which dives straight in, being fast paced with well complimented vocals from Chris Devine and complex skilled chunky guitar riffs and licks from Chris and Andy, an extra depth and atmosphere is aided by synths from L.X.
‘Beautiful Monster’ flows wonderfully on from the previous song and has a high impact, being a slow yet deadly power ballad! This is full of ‘divine’ harmonies, well-structured guitars and instruments, as well as Chris’s emotive charming delivery – all dancing and seeping effortlessly together to create pandemonium, in a deliciously dark epic manner!
We are graced with some extra beauties in the form of an acoustic version of, ‘When You Fall’ which shows of Chris’s impressive varied vocals, in this stripped down rendition, which remains highly melodic, with his vocals being the main focus…and he shines in the spotlight, no doubt aided by his passion and charisma which oozes off him! The next bonus is a remix of ‘Dead Alley’ which is even more brooding and atmospheric, with a heavy prominent dark beat and highlights the haunting keys and synth sounds.
The band are in their element on this EP, so I can see why they reissued it again, because if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of hearing them, this EP is the definitely the place to start, especially ahead of their upcoming album, ‘Dark Days & Bright Nights’. Yes on this EP you can draw similarities to other acts, but this isn’t their intention and I think this is made clear; they have created a luscious beautiful dark medley, which the masses can sink their teeth into! Luna Rise simply thrive on this EP through sheer passion and talent, which no doubt they will portray on their anticipated album!
